Is it me or do I hear hundreds of thousands of women rolling over in their graves right now? Yep, I am positive I just heard Queen Victoria. Hmm… not sure but that sounded like Benazir Bhutto and right behind her Princess Diana, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marie Curie, Harriet Tubman, Olympia Brown, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Isabella I of Castile and Aragon.
When questioning if Sarah Palin is or would be a bad mom for her ambitions or contemplate soundness of her family values, why stop there? Why not question the effectiveness of every motivated, working woman who also is a mother? And in doing so, aren’t we in effect, questioning the overall role women have in today’s society? Perhaps before we judge the role of (this) working woman; one should ponder what an undesirable mother (parent) really is (or is not). What are family values and when or to whom family values apply to? As well as what defines a working mom.
Core (family) values will never change: Health, Home, and Happiness. Home, Country, and God. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Whichever core one may subscribe to, (family) values are individual and prejudiced by economics, sociology and environment. To arbitrarily simplify the term to encompass everyone, does not lend to individual variables, differences and rights. Nor should it. However, the ultimate goal is always the same, provide the best life possible for your children while additionally providing adaptable tools necessary for them to survive and prosper as adults. It's a (family) Value issue when a woman is on a presidential ticket because how dare she subject her family to such? BUT isn't a man on a Presidential ticket subjecting his family to the same or similar issues?
Over history, women have always maintained duel roles as parent and worker. Unfortunately, the work done has not been recognized as such therefore they did not receive a paycheck. Women have fought battles at the side of their husbands. Worked the land that sustained their families’ existence. Protected their homes (and children) while husbands were fighting for our great nation. While we are pondering this, we cannot leave out the role, obligations and responsibilities of being First Lady to the President, of the United States of America. Should any of these women be precluded from consideration as working moms?
To address the bad mom quandary the answer to this will vary to extreme subjective opinions. However for the purpose of abridgment of this debate, for this issue can be very simplistic. No one is qualified to judge Governor Palin as a mother aside from her husband and children. Beyond those six individuals, the question of Mrs. Palin of (potentially) being an ineffective mom should be bunged. Unless one would like to equally scrutinize every (working) mother in the world, including past, present and future First Ladies. Are you sure you want to go there?
In conclusion, I find nothing unsavory about Governor Palin or her qualifications as a mother or her (family) values. On quite the contrary, she is a strong, rooted individual who embodies the character of Female Role Model. She should be admired, revered, and respected. Regardless of the outcome of the 2008 Presidential Election, that preverbal glass ceiling was obliterated, the moment her integrity was questioned. In essence, at that instant the integrity, qualifications, and abilities of every (working) woman (mothers or not) were questioned. At the instance, was I the only woman, mother, parent, and/or wage earner insulted?
